-TEACHER'S DINNER-

Last Friday was the Teacher’s Dinner at Harbour View Hotel. The members of the prefect committee board were invited along, and we were also involved in the preparation of the dinner. Jia Seng, Dexter, Samuel, Nancy, Cindy, Teck Siong and I, (+ Janet) had our hands tied up because of it. On Thursday, Nancy, Cindy, Janet and I were busy preparing the door gifts for the teachers. The door gifts were a personalised towel, a few pens and pencils, a cute keychain or magnet, a new name card and a lanyard. It took us two days to complete everything, and the worst part was that there were more than 130 gifts to prepare and we were still in the middle of our exams! Then Jia Seng, Dex, Sam and I stayed back on Thursday afternoon to design the brochure for that night. It was a good thing I knew how to use Microsoft Publisher! This is what it looks like:

The brochure design. Its suppose to be folded into three parts. The last column of the 1st pix is the first page.

Jia Seng
even wrote a poem for the teachers. Haha, not bad aye? I know most people won’t believe that he wrote it, but he really did! We felt pretty satisfied about our design, but when we went to photostate in the next day, it looked terrible because the grey and white ink didn’t blend with the pink paper that the teacher wanted to use. Oh well…

Then the night came and the first thing we prefects did was hand out the teacher’s gift at the entrance. It was pretty hectic because some teachers came together at the same time and we had to rummage through 10 plastic bags to look for their gifts. It was a good thing I suggested earlier on that we made a list of names to clip on the outside of the plastic bags to make it easier to search for the teacher’s gift bag. Before the dinner started, the nine of us sat at the table that is fully reserved for prefects while the other four sat with the teachers at the back. The night started off just like any other ordinary dinner, but when Pn Poh and Pn Sony started “karoeke-ing”, all the other teachers went on a hype! Mr Tan went up there and started dancing, followed by Pn Alicia, Mr Lim and so on! It was so funny to see them act like that and Ning Jian commented that Mr Tan danced like Mr Bean!

Some time after that, I went to the back to discuss something with the other prefects, and when I turned around, I found my mum and Mr Lim dancing in the middle of the room! I was like OMG… Haha… Then Mr Cosmos sang, boy can he sing! He has a really great voice! Oh ya, Pn Sony has a really great voice too! A new side of the teachers was discovered that night!

Then came the first game. Each table was given a pack of straws and everyone at the table had to cooperate to build or make something out of the straws. We prefects went to Mr Cosmos’ table to see what our Physics teacher came up with. But all he made was an umbrella! Haha. Some teachers made houses and boats. They even made the KL Twin Tower! You’d think that the teachers, who are so dead serious in school, would think that this game was silly and that they wouldn’t even bother. But it was the exact opposite and they really had fun doing really silly things they wouldn’t normally do in school on a daily basis.

After some singing and lucky draws, the second game was played. I think it was by far the most hectic and funniest game played by teachers that night! It’s called Mummy Return, where the teachers were given toilet paper and they had to dress up their unfortunate friend with the given item. Pn Alicia was dressed in a Hawaiian Hula outfit, Miss Fu became the Statue of Liberty, but the best was Mr Mohd Allin (one of the school grounds man). He looked like a real mummy, and he even had a Pharaoh’s necklace made out of the loo roll tube around his neck! Because he was wrapped up so tight, he had to HOP all the way up to stage. To spice things up, he stretched out his arms while hoping! He looked like a Chinese mo-kui (ghost)! Then Pn Poh saw him hoping up to stage she also joined in and started hoping with him!! Honestly, we prefects got to see a new side of the teachers and they didn’t care that we students were there, they still went all out and had a blast, which was super fun for us to watch!

Clockwise: The Statue of Liberty! The Mummy Allin, and the other mummies...

Everything else went on as planned and somewhere along the line I managed to take some pictures with my darling friends.

Sam (outside gals toilet!!) and Dex

Suria and Teck Siong

Jia Seng (he had fun seeing how short i am) and Sze Wei

Before the night ended, we prefects had to choose the King and Queen of the Night, as well as the teacher who dressed and harmonized with the theme of the night which was “Secret of Garden” (don’t ask, we didn’t come up with the name). Mr Hendrew and Pn Poh were King and Queen because they were the most sporting teachers that night, what with all the singing and their crazy antics! The very best part was that when Mr Bong, our school principal, gave out the prize to Pn Poh, she did a little dance and wiggle and he also danced and wiggle a little on stage in front of everyone!! I bet everyone was shocked to see him do that because he’s usually very rasional, uptight and very strict in school!

After everyone has gone back, Ting Ming, Yen Sia, Jia Seng, Dex, Sam and Teck Siong went for a walk at waterfront. The initial plan was to catch a movie, but Jia Seng changed his mind. He kept asking me to follow them, but my mum didn’t allow me because it was already very late at night. He even went to ask for my mum’s permission! Goodness… Then my mum and some of her friends stayed back for happy hour (karoeke), and I had to wait for them to finish.

It was a really fun night and we were the first ever prefects to attend any teachers function! Yay! We got to witness first hand the teachers let their hair down and go all crazy and nuts! I wasn’t really surprised at all, because my mum has told me before about what they do during their dinner. I’m just glad I got to spend some more time and have fun with my dear prefect friends. I’m looking forward to the next time we get to sit down together and have this much fun and more!
